„We stayed at the Toyoko Inn Hokkaido Shinhakodatehokuto-eki Minami near Hakodate located right next to the train station on April 21, 2025.
Before our arrival, we emailed reception to request an earlier check in time and they replied saying it was no problem and that we just have to pay 1000 Yen. Great! However….when we arrived, the man at the front desk had no idea what we were talking about but eventually he agreed to let us in after paying this amount.
Strike one.

„Great place to stay. Property is very spacious. Staff responded very quickly to my email enquiry. Only thing to note, there is only 1 aircon unit that is in the main lounge covering the whole property. Luckily the weather was not too hot and the bedrooms managed to remain at comfortable temperature. I can see it could be a problem if the weather gets hotter and the doors to the rooms are closed to keep the early morning light out. “
„Sehr angenehmes Ambiente, freundliches Personal, für Japan wirklich sehr geräumige Zimmer, das Badezimmer gewinnt bisher den top Preis unserer Reise . Lediglich beim Frühstück sollte man nicht zu viel erwarten. “
„Very nice hotel with beautiful views of the city and ocean. Tattoo friendly sauna, which is rare in japan. The open air onsen has a beautiful view of either the ocean and mountains or the city, depending on the day. Good location, walking distance from the train station and beside the fish market“
„Super friendly staff. They even picked me up from the station because I arrived late in Hakodate. They also helped with sightseeing planning. The Japanese style room was quiet, big and had everything I needed. The shared bathroom was always clean. The hotel is 5 minutes from the station and therefore a good starting point for sightseeing. Don't hesitate to ask the staff if you need something - they will always try to help you out!“
„Nice Hotels to stay some nights, the furniture and bathroom are a little old but it was okay. We could not sleep that well the second night because we heard our neighbour snorring very loud.“
Empfehlenswert“
„We had a very pleasant stay. The lady at the front desk was super nice and helpful. Communication in English language was very easy and we liked that the hotel had prepared some information material in English. The rooms were a bit dated but totally clean. The hotel is located near a tram stop which is very convenient and even the train station is within walking distance. At night the surrounding area is very quiet. No restaurants around but there are some convenience stores. The rooftop area is ...

"Grosser Raum mit Küche, Essplatz, Balkon, Aussicht super, Frühstück super, aber WiFi grottenschlecht, in der Umgebung sind keine Restaurants oder Läden."
"I had a wonderful stay at JR Inn Hakodate, and would absolutely recommend it—especially if you’re arriving by train, as the hotel is directly connected to the JR station, making it incredibly convenient.
I booked a higher room category, and the room size was noticeably larger than the usual standard in Japan. If you’re traveling with luggage or simply want more space to relax, I can’t stress enough how important it is to upgrade to a bigger room—it really enhanced my comfort.
Check-in and check-out were smooth and efficient, and basic amenities like a fridge and kettle were provided. Tap water is safe to drink in Japan, so that’s a big plus. While there’s no in-room coffee, I brought my own instant coffee. Alternatively, there’s a lounge on the 12th floor offering green tea and basic drip coffee—what it lacks in strength, the lovely view makes up for.
The tram stop is just outside, giving easy access to major sights, but I also walked a lot and really enjoyed exploring the area on foot.
Lastly, a small detail: I kindly pointed out some dust in the A/C vent to one of the housekeeping staff, who was very sweet and receptive. It’s clear the staff takes pride in maintaining a welcoming and clean environment.
A peaceful, well-located base in Hakodate—great value, comfort, and convenience."

The next morning, our train was due to leave at 6:21 am. Breakfast is served at 6:30 am. The breakfast was all laid out in the eating area ready to go and we politely asked if it would be ok if we ate 26 minutes earlier than their actual start time seeing as it was ready. We were at reception at 6:04 am exactly and we politely explained to the same man at the front desk as yesterday that my wife is pregnant and needs to eat frequently or she will feel sick and get low blood sugar and that our train leaves at 6:21 am so we cannot wait for 6:30 and it is almost a 4 hour journey. He was very rude and inhospitable and would make zero exceptions! He had zero understanding and didn’t seem to care at all that she was pregnant and that we were just asking to have a small amount of food before we left. He even had the nerve to laugh at us when we told him that was not very hospitable. We just couldn’t understand what the problem was as the food was all prepared and ready and sitting at the buffet area. We paid for the"
"Close to the train station and morning market. Staff speaks English and was very courteous. The room was larger than expected. The city tram stops right in front of the hotel making it convenient to reach the two major tourist areas within a few minutes."
