English hospitality&poor management in old stones.
We feel so sorry to see such a beautiful place suffering of poor hotel management: We were two couples there for the opera in Glyndebourne. At arrival we were told we have booked 3 rooms which was not correct for we were just two couples. The rooms were nice, not exceedingly, with balcony overlooking the large wonderful area on the lawn. But the plumbers had done a miserable job: the sink and the bath tubes in both rooms were clogged and only after reclamation at reception were they fixed - true with immediate response - but cleaning maids should have noticed the problems before and the same applies for the loose toilet lid. The hotel is suffering of chronic luck of service staff so we had really to go and look after service people to serve us tea in the sitting area or the drinks in the bar after diner. The service at diner and breakfast however was OK. The quality and variety of food offered for diner and breakfast were also OK. Despite the obvious understaffed team we found the people very helpful and responsive to our wishes and problems (umbrellas lent for the opera). We found that such a beautiful place with long history could become a real pearl for that area with a proper management.

Please accept my sincere apologies that you had to look for drinks service in the bar after dinner, however thank you for noting that the service and food quality at breakfast and dinner were satisfactory. I am also sorry that you experienced a maintenance issue in your bathroom, however I was pleased to note that we were able to rectify the problem immediately. Nice old Georgian house with an extension in keeping. Great staff and food. Smoke ground for a stroll in the grand air. Very comfy huge bed.

On our arrival Franco showed us a possible upgrade of our room which was value for money. Rob got us our lunch and couldn’t do enough to please. Phill is another asset to the company seating us to breakfast and showing us the Suites. Trisha was the the lady making the rooms and again really helpful, after this stay we will be back

Comfortable but not the Jane Austin Fantasy
Beautiful main house but most of the rooms are in the buildings annexes along with the breakfast so you really don’t spend time in the charming old part unless it’s for a wedding function. The grounds are beautiful to walk around and As a wedding venue it seemed great but for a ‘normal’ stay it’s a bit disappointing if you want the ‘Jane Austen’ film set from the inside!

Amazing place if you like history very special.

Dining room very soulless, lacked atmosphere and "felt" cold. Apparently we were not alone in this feedback and something is being done to rectify this. Menu was disappointing and didn't change from day to day, in fact we had to select from the room service menu on our last night. Amazingly the white ball in the snooker set, looked very second hand and was a different size to all the other balls.

Disappointing
The photos are deceiving, while the rooms and furniture are there, the hotel lacks any character: there is plenty of staff but no one to help, the "reception" is not always manned and no other staff can help; the orangery is an empty space with not one plant in sight, the hallway smells of harsh chemicals, the bar could have been a relaxing place, but we had to wait and bring out own drinks outside, and boxes and plastic trays were crowding the bar area. The breakfast waitress was trying to be nice enough, but forgetful and should be re-trained in how to speak to customers (I would have walked out if she had spoken to me as she did to another customer); again you walk into breakfast and the first thing you see are plastic crates. The nicer areas of the hotel are not utilised. In short, it could be a beautiful hotel and stay, but it needs an overhaul of management and redesign of the space.

A very good stay. when booking, I had requested a quiet, upper-floor, end-of-corridor room.....and I was delighted to find that they gave me the perfect room. :-)
