I very much enjoyed the convenience of being right downtown. It is on a busy street so street noise is noticeable at night. It is quite incognito from the outside which could be a plus. The concierge at the Memoria was very helpful with tourist suggestions. Would do it again.

The rooms were nice and the kitchen and water dispenser were very handy. It was very loud though with the people on the streets outside being able to hear clearly when sleeping, and everytime the water was used in any rooms the pipes made a very loud grinding sound which was very frustrating when trying to sleep. Good location though, close to many things.

Great location, great price, lots of added security to get in, and clean rooms. I like the shared kitchen, especially the water dispenser from the fridge. I got the single bedroom, and it is spacious if sharing with another person. There is a TV equipped with local channels and streaming service you have to input. The area is on the hilly side, but not too difficult to access. A few things that I didn’t like were how thin the walls are in the room. Imagine trying to get sleep but you can hear the next room talking almost clearly with every shuffle and movement. Also the shower was hard to figure out, but took several trial and errors. Overall it was a great experience, and would definitely lodge here again.

This property is not as it appears. While the units are nicely decorated, the location is convenient, and the staff is friendly (but located elsewhere), the positives end there. Cons: - The check-in experience was poor. I didn't receive any email with instructions and had to wait outside until someone let me in, only to find that I had to check-in at the hotel across the street. However, despite the frustrating process, the staff was excellent. - The building is run-down and almost seemed abandoned. Upon entering, there was discarded furniture and a completely dark foyer. Could not find lights anywhere. - The walls are paper-thin. I could hear the guests in the next room snoring. Pros: - Nicely decorated, but this is less appealing when you're uneasy about entering the building and can't sleep because you can hear your neighbor snoring. - Convenient location. - Clean.

The room had a terrible sewer problem, with rancid smell coming up from the shower drain and toilet stool and creating an odor that was sickening. We arrived late at night so we could not leave and find somewhere else; we were there for just over 7 hours. We could not check out fast enough the next morning!

From the first greeting to our check out we had an absolutely wonderful stay. The staff at the MEMORIA hotel were so very kind and helpful and allowed us to store our luggage without me even having to ask. Great located
It was a little bit expensive considering that the building was old and rundown. A major negative point was the noise caused by the many vehicles driving by. Other than that, the location of the hotel was really convenient, it was clean and the front desk guys were kind and helpful with recommendations.

Centrally situated, as everyone else has already stated! Nicely decorated as well. However, 1.) the moldy, mildewy, pungent smell drifting from the bathroom was inescapable. This is an extremely disappointing and unexpected feature of our guesthouse room that really soured our experience. 2.) The other comments are not kidding around when they say the walls are thin. You can hear absolutely every conversation and noise in the neighboring room, which can make sleep difficult. Bring earplugs. 3.) Even this was seemingly stated nowhere on the Guesthouse website, remember to check in at the Memoria hotel up the hill from the guesthouse. In addition, their directions to reach the guesthouse were very vague and sent us on a wild goose chase up and down the hill looking for the door to the guesthouse. You need three codes to get to your room. Heads up, the number on the (green) entrance door to the guesthouse is 128.

Overall value for money, especially for tourists
I had a good stay at Lel Madalena---my room had an internal courtyard view that was nothing to speak of, but the bed and armchair were comfortable (although the rickety clothing rack in lieu of a wardrobe would not be that helpful---there are wall hooks though); the kitchen had an espresso machine and a water dispensing fridge (but no hot water kettle); and the shower pressure was good and everything clean. The only major minus was the spotty wifi, because I was on a working holiday. If I were just on holiday, I would not have minded as much. The GuestHouse is in a very convenient location---definitely get a bifana from up the street! The receptionists at the Memoria were helpful and the complimentary water and port were nice, but they originally gave me an access code that did not work, which was frustrating.

This is the first time we have stayed in a GuestHouse. It is an unusual set up for getting keys to access the unit, which happened to be a few doors down the street. The hotel Memoria staff that kept the keys were very helpful in getting us settled. We are are thankful for that. With key pad access code and a key we felt secure. Our unit was in a renovated older building with 2 flights of stairs up. Though fairly small it had high ceilings and a large bright French door that opened on to a small wrought iron balcony that overlooked the street below. The bathroom was on the tiny side but it even had a shower. The bed and pillows were comfortable. The room was clean and well kept. The kitchen that was for all the suites was next door. It also had a key pad access. It was fairly well equipped with two ovens and full sized fridge. No stove top though. Groceries are found close by. The location was perfect for seeing the area by foot. However, they are several options for transportation. We bought a transit pass which covered most modes except for the metro and it worked well for us. Enjoyed our stay.

This hotel/guesthouse cannot manage the number of guests it currently has. When my boyfriend and I arrived, it took us over 20 minutes just to be seen by the front desk to check-in. Then once we went to our room it has clearly not been cleaned. The room was an absolute mess with the sheets as if they had just been slept in. The kitchen we waited in was dirty with trash bags piling up and smelt bad. We complained our room was not ready, just to be told to come back later. This is unacceptable if you have checked in a guest already. My boyfriend and I ended up waiting an entire hour after begging the cleaning lady to please clean our room next. The front desk never did anything else to check in with us or make sure we were satisfied after our horrendous check-in experience. Will never stay here again. For the price, there are many better options in Lisbon.

I received the wrong code for the doors, impossible to open my room door. Shower door leaks and create a flood in bathroom. the first solution offered was "towels to dry the floor". when i complaint in the second day, the responsible only want to "discuss the problem to find a solution". Finally, for the 3rd night they upgrade us and give a better room. Don't accept the room No 6

Great location, although very noisy street. Easy to get everywhere in the city from here. Good size room, clean. Nice kitchen. It was a lovely place in the center of town. Everything was in walking distance and it was very clean. We also loved there was an air conditioner in the room.

The shower drain was not cleaned properly and it backed up so badly that it flooded two rooms. We tried to have the property manager work with us for a refund because we could not shower, but they refused to help us.

We had a great 2 week vacation in Portugal. I enjoyed our stay at Madalena house but definitely some things to note. Room: We were in room #1. Request not to stay in this room #. This room is separate from the other 6 rooms in this guest house and open to the stair well. It was very noisy and you could hear every single person going up and down the steps at all hours of the night. The room was not very secure.The door had a flimsy small lock with a 1/2" gap and so much wiggle room, one firm push and the room would have been wide open, I did not feel totally secure especially when ppl kept propping the downstairs lobby area door open. The ad shows these beautiful large French doors that open onto a balcony and the street below but they do not open, they are broken, I even asked and was told not to open them. Parking: there is no onsite parking as noted in the ad. Beware the onstreet parking is very difficult, it is impossible to understand the Portuguese parking rules with risk of ticket and towing and the streets are very hilly so driving and Parking is a real challenge. We parked in the grocery store parking lot for 20euros daily. It was safe and secure but pricey. Location: Excellent, close to everything including groceries, Laundromat, downtown core. Air conditioning: excellent, worked almost too well, has a great remote to adjust yourself. Cleanliness-very clean, just a very strong perfume smell in the room that was overpowering.

Dear Yvonne We are happy that you enjoyed your stay. As for the security of your room, we have never had any problem with this, the door to the building is always closed. We are sorry that you made a lot of noise on the stairs, we understand that it disturbs your sleeping comfort. We did not know that the balcony door is not working as it should, we were not informed of this and no doubt it would have been resolved immediately and not the answer do not use it,because it makes no sense. We made it clear in the welcome message that we have no parking, the streets of Lisbon require you to pay to park and the vast majority are for residents only subject to towing, it was explained to you personally that. We suggest the nearest car park, it is not part of Lel Guest so the decision is up to the guest. I hope you can stay at another of our hotels and have a different idea in the future.
