SHIFTING SANDS HOUSE is a high desert retreat set on the top of ‘Moonlight Mesa’, in north Joshua Tree. Experience the serene & relaxing space, thoughtfully designed & set amongst the beauty of the expansive high desert. Lounge on the insanely comfortable L sofa whilst looking out of the striking picture windows into endless views of distant mountain ranges. Relax in the hot tub, cool down in the pool, or stargaze on one of our many terraces. JT Park & Pappy & Harriet's are 15 minutes away.
THE HOUSE The property has an open plan living space with a designer Reform kitchen (with breakfast bar so you can cook and entertain at the same time). The spacious dining nook just off the kitchen area allows you to cater for large dinner parties. The living area has a huge and sumptuous L sofa that can comfortably fit 6 people. A 55" TV sits above an oak media cabinet perfect for film nights. Or inside the media cabinet you will find a collection of all your favorite boardgames. A wood burning stove is the centre piece of this open living space and offers a cozy focal point on the chilly winter evenings.
The house offers 3 spacious bedrooms (2 King size beds and 1 queen). All bedrooms feature luxurious linen bedding and brand new memory foam and spring hybrid mattresses for ultimate comfort. Each bedroom features black out blinds or curtains as well as a dedicated writing space and en-suite bathroom in the master bedroom.
To the back of the house you will find an oasis of outdoor entertainment. The very private courtyard features a hot tub, sun loungers, a covered outdoor dining area, outdoor lounge furniture and fire pit, as well as a BBQ grill perfect for cooking up large family meals and enjoying the warm nights alfresco.
To the front of the house, you can enjoy the incredible sunset views. We have a seating area (thoughtfully designed with Hay design chairs) as well as a full dining table set up if you want an alternate location to enjoy your evening meal and watch the sunset.
If you venture to the lower level area about 30 feet in front of the house you will find our cowboy tub (note this is only in use April to October) with an area on the terrace for hanging out. Perfect for cooling off and soaking in the unbeatable views of the mesa all the way to Pipes Canyon and San Jacinto.
GUEST ACCESS The guests have access to all the living spaces and all the land within the property boundary's including patio. The Garage is not an area guests have access to as this is used for our laundry and supply storage and is considered a work and storage space. Unfortunately we don't offer laundry on site, but we can recommend local laundry services on request.
INTERACTION WITH GUESTS We offer self check-in, but we are on the end of the phone if you need anything at all during your stay. Our team are all local and we are happy to help.
OTHER DETAILS TO NOTE — Number of guest The entire property has 3 bedrooms. The maximum capacity is 6.
— Parties or Events or Extra Guest We do not allow guests to throw parties or events at our property.
Please be kindly noticed that all extra guests should be approved by host before arrival and they will need to leave the property by 9pm per County’s STR Reinforcement Code. Any unapproved visitors will be charged $200 per person according to the House Rules in the listing. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
— Parking Please use the large driveway space for parking your vehicles. Please do not block the entry / exit of the property with your vehicle in case of emergency.
— Oven Please make sure to turn on the vent while using the oven, if cooking something smokey you should also open the window above the sink to let in a little more air. Note that the oven only turns on when you turn the timer on (oven heat control is the centre right knob, timer is the centre left knob). Also please ensure all knobs are turned completely to OFF when not in use.
— Smart TV We have a smart TV in the house, please connect it with your accounts and remember to log out at the end of your stay.
— Air Conditioning We provide central air conditioning in the house which has smart control and easy to operate. Please turn off the air conditioning when you are not in the house to conserve energy.
— Jacuzzi (no extra fees) Please shower before use. The temperature control can be controlled by repeatedly pressing the temperature icon on the control panel on the edge of the Jacuzzi. Please do not turn the heat above 104 as this may cause damage to the system. Please don’t put any liquid/solid soap into it, any extra costs occurring will be charged. No glass is aloud near the jacuzzi. Guests will take all liability and responsibility for your own safety.
— Pool Our cowboy pool is not heated, but it is filtered. Please shower before use, and take care. We have the pool cleaned out twice a week, but you may find some stray leaves in there. Use the net to remove any surface leaves before use. Note that the cowboy pool is closed in winter months.
Anyone under 18 needs his/her parent’s present while swimming or near the pool for safety reasons. No diving and no glass near the pool.. The guests will take full liability and responsibility for your own and your guests safety.
— Pets Two well-behaved pups allowed. There is a $95 pet fee, which is paid when booking. No pups on the furniture and no pups left alone in the house (without being crated) or in the yard. Please be aware that there are snakes and coyotes in the desert.
— Dishes Please load the dishwasher prior to checking out if you have used any dishes. Be sure to remove excess food into the trash. We will run the dishwasher once you’ve completed your stay.
— Broken Items We understand that accidents happen, if anything breaks down - even if it's your fault - let us know so we can send someone to fix it or replace it for you and future guests (contact information will be provided before check in). Please leave the house a neat and tidy condition. Thank you for your consideration.
— Plumbing All houses in Joshua Tree are on a Septic Tank system. For this reason nothing can be flushed down the toilet except toilet paper. Following these guidelines will avoid problems with the plumbing. If it is determined that the pipes have been clogged due to misuse, a $200 repair fee will be charged. Thank you for your cooperation.
— Please let us know if there are any serious stains on the furniture or floors, or if there is damage to anything and we will try our best to fix it ASAP.
— Security Camera According to the requirements from our Insurance Company, there are security cameras facing the main house entrance and back entrance.
— Film/Video and Photos Our property is a beautiful place to shoot photos and videos, we welcome you to tag us on Insta at @shiftingsandshouse. Any shoots with any commercial purposes are priced at a different rate and must be cleared with us in advance of your stay. If you are in doubt, inquire first. We will charge $5000 per violation, plus production fee up to $575/hour.
— No-Smoking Smoking (including E-Cig) is not allowed in the property or within 15 feet exterior door. Please dispose cigarettes into a plastic bag and put it in the outdoor trash can. If above is not maintained, we will charge $100 special cleaning fee. Please take care as there is a high fire risk in the desert. Ensure butts are completely out before disposing. We appreciate your cooperation!
— Checking Out Please check out of our rental by 11:00AM. Please checking out by this time ensures that we have enough time to clean the property and get it ready for our next guest.

WILDLIFE: The desert is wild and if you are very sensitive to insects, mice & bugs - it may not be for you. If you leave a door open, animals, flies, bugs and more might run in. There are indeed sightings of snakes (we have a couple of non-venomous California King snakes living on the property) as well as regular visits from our local coyote pack. Be careful when you see large very strong spiders webs, these are most likely the home of black widows. We do get the area treated monthly but they are very common in this part of Joshua Tree to please be careful and keep all doors closed.
We love the nature that surrounds us and so do most of our guests, but just a friendly reminder that we are indeed in the wild. And we are always more than happy to have a creature safely relocated if you find it to be a threat.
