Having visited & stayed in historical properties for over 24 years, we've seen the best of the best & the worst of the worst. The Admiral Fuqua House is absolutely outstanding. (Caveat; if you're looking for jetted tubs and flat screens in every room, this isn't the property for you. If you're looking for an amazing authentic lodging so your entire group may remain together safely, but still not be right on top of each other, THIS is your Huckleberry!) Located in the district known as Millionaire's Row, this home is situated on a corner lot, surrounded by a lovely residential neighborhood. The steps going up the side of the property and it's adjacent veranda serve as the current entrance. With a spacious Dining Room, TWO Parlors, a full Kitchen and a full Bath, the first floor is spacious and filled with light. There is also a lighted, covered porch outside the kitchen with seating, a gas grill, yard games and a hammock, should you have the inclination. There are two sets of stairs to the second floor; the sweeping walnut-bannistered Main Hall stairs, and an intact back Servant's stair! Both are sturdy and stable. My 84 yr old MIL (walks w/cane & has knee & hip replacement) found the Servant's stair to be easier to climb, & felt more secure due to the closer walls. Three amply sized Bedrooms lie upstairs, & one small BR, an additional full Bath as well as Laundry/Storage room. The Master BR is massive, with seating & abundant light during the day with it's many large windows. Windows all have coverings. The home itself is lovely and expansive with high ceilings, original mantles and exposed brickwork present. This is a historical renovation in progress; it is NOT perfect because they are literally in the process of saving this grand & elegant home from the ravages of time. It is warm & inviting, and gives one a real sense of dwelling in America's Hometown. Our youngest (5 yo) said, "Momma, I don't want to leave!" tearfully as we packed suitcases to depart. Same sweet girl, SAME. Our entire family loved our stay at The Fuqua House. It was easy to prepare meals & serve, to laugh as we played games in the front Parlor, to sit on the Veranda & watch the sunset... for all of us just to be together on a beautiful Fall family weekend. The Owners were most gracious & kind, & check-in/out couldn't have been easier. As a lover of history & of all things time-worn but beautiful, I simply cannot wait to return to The Admiral Fuqua House. Thanks!
