The city's primary, older Fiveash Water Treatment Plant uses a lime-softening process that cannot remove these tannins, leaving the water safe to drink but aesthetically discolored.Because of infrastructure upgrades, discolored water is occasionally more prominent during periods when the city flushes its raw water lines or shifts reliance solely to the older facility.Despite the yellow hue, city officials consistently reassure residents that the discolored water meets all state and federal drinking water standards.
