Whangamata is about an hour and a half from Auckland, Hamilton, or Tauranga and is a much-loved coastal town famous for its fantastic surf and swimming beach. In town, you’ll find plenty of shops and cafés to explore, or take a short drive to Opoutere Beach to visit the Coastal Bird Reserve. For calmer waters, grab a paddleboard and head to the estuary.
