Cowes has Aldi, Coles and Woolworths but major stores are available in Wonthaggi, a great day out and a town with Bunnings, Mc Donald's and KFC offering a whole range of major stores like Big W and Kmart. About a 40min drive to Wonthaggi the coastline and attractions along the way are sure to delight.

M & O Cafe and Tapas Cowes
Hit this bustling spot, directly opposite the main beach, for all-day breakfasts that go the extra mile, whether it’s the Scoville-scale hit of chilli scrambled eggs with dukkah or the sticky salted-caramel sauce that anoints banana bread French toast. Weekend evenings see the switch flicked to a punchy tapas menu.

The Cape Kitchen Woolamai
Arresting clifftop views over wild Bass Strait almost distract from the smart modern menu built around regional produce at this sleek dining room. Beef carpaccio with celeriac remoulade and caper speckled cured salmon bring Mediterranean flair to a leisurely lunch.

Isola Di Capri Cowes
Phillip Island’s oldest Italian restaurant remains its finest, with a timeless whitewashed dining room and focus on the classics, from calamari fritti and spaghetti carbonara to a best-in-show margherita pizza. Après-meal, pop next door to its gelateria for a double scoop.

The Store Ventnor
This rustic one-stop gourmet shop will get your pulse racing with beans from local roaster Folks Coffee before nudging you towards food bliss with brunch fare such as a spicy tuna melt oozing cheddar and jazzed up with jalapeños.

Wild Food Farm Ryhll
Walk the bush food trail at this lush property near Rhyll before furthering your exploration of Indigenous ingredients with the wattleseed scones, native-berry beef pies and barramundi with finger lime aïoli served at the farmhouse café.

You can check out the waves from the Smiths Beach lookout before making your way down the zig-zag boardwalk to the sand. There you will find a mix of locals and visitors heading out to the surf while families go to the sandy fringes to explore rock pools. You might see the van from Pro Surf Coaching, they are a local outfit run by the Amorim brothers who can help sharpen your surf skills.

Look for the cow rocking sunglasses on the Cowes main street and you will find Grumpy's Crazy Golf, an eye-wateringly colourful 18-hole mini-golf course. Inside the vibe is "bovine fun fair" with cow mascots, a rainbow paint job and holes that run the gamut from loop-the-loop putts to golf pinball machines. Get the final hole in one for a free game next time, or try to knock the leader off the top score chalkboard

After last year's terrible bushfires, Phillip Island's Koala Conservation Reserve had to make room for a few singed and sore marsupials, who have since been returned to the wild. But the regular dozy inhabitants of this important koala reserve are always ready to receive visitors, just don't be offended if they greet you with a yawn. Then centre offers boardwalk viewing platforms, a nature walk and plenty of other wildlife like echidnas and bats.

Western Port Ferries offers an island-hopping cruise across to French Island. The island used to be full of chicory farms and you can still find some of the old kilns dotted around, as well as a host of koalas. It is two-thirds national park and the largest island in Victoria.

Bus services do operate on a regular basis with Bus Stops easily identifiable around the Island. There are bike hires and great walking tracks interconnected throughout Phillip Island. Generally the best way around is to utilize your vehicle(s) to get maximum benefit from sightseeing.
