We loved our stay in Madeira, largely due to the welcoming Reid's, English hotel tradition at it's best: extremely kind and helpful staff, extraordinary services, wonderful food - I've rarely seen this anywhere else on my travel. The location is perfect, close to the centre, the pool area on the cliffs is fantastic and provides possibilities to enjoy activities on the ocean. If you fancy calmer relaxation away from the pool area, the lush gardens will be just right for you (beach chairs are available there, too), enjoying the sun or shades of the palm trees. Our initial "Charming" rooms was rather small, but we have been able to upgrade without problem to a wonderful "classic" room, with morning sun and view on Funchal and the marina. The hotel is breathing the old charms and style of it's founding times and we adored it: the history explained in pictures and displays, the carefully arranged vintage furniture and fresh flowers through the whole building. The only room for improvement worth mentioning was that the electronic equipment in our room was not really up the latest standards, we had to unplug some of the lamps to charge our mobile devices. However wifi connectivity was great throughout the hotel (and pool area). I'm sure we'll return.
