Enjoy gentle shore walks or attempt the entire 10-mile loop of the lake. Hire bicycles and head out along the 3-mile Keswick to Threlkeld Trail, which runs along an old railway route and is also great for walking. More serious hikers might like to attempt Skiddaw, 5 miles away, with its panoramic views. Venture 1 mile to Derwent Water Marina to hire rowing boats or kayaks, and book tickets for your party to see a show at the Theatre by the Lake.

Step inside to find yourselves in the boot room area, where you can hang jackets and tuck shoes and bags out of the way. There is a handy family shower room just here too. Stoke up the wood burner in here on crisp autumn evenings and sink back into a sofa or soft chair with a cup of tea or a glass of wine. Read a book, watch the Smart TV or play a family game.
