Unfortunately I can't rate this with higher marks, but I would like to. The beds were clean & comfortable, the fridge & microwave were good amenities, the bathroom was well appointed, the AC worked well, & all of the staff were friendly & helpful. There supposedly was wifi but never worked. The old phone booths should have mounted iPads and printers. The experience of staying in a historic hotel was worth it. Plus there is a small museum off the lobby that honors the building's past. Because the hotel is old- some modification of standards is to be expected. I hope to stay there again but ideally when more has been done to bring back the splendor of yesteryear.
However, the place was inundated by ants! They weren't just in the room but found in the lobby, in the hallways, & even seen in heeps right outside. To be fair, I saw a larger than normal ant population blocks away, so maybe Douglas is experiencing ants how Bodega Bay experienced Birds. Perhaps recent rain has caused the problem; but it felt like The Gadsen was the epicenter. I'm not sure if the problem can be 100% controlled, but I believe more could be done. They likely know guests are going to see the ants, but the dillema is, does the hotel look at the eleph(ant) in the room, & say they're being spayed? Or, do you hope people look the other way? It's hard to do that when you see your discarded bath towel with five large red ants on it! I don't have the antser but they kept me from rating higher.
