Set in the picture-perfect village of Shilton, near Burford, The Chestnuts is a multi award-winning Cotswold retreat, beautifully blending period character with contemporary luxury. Dating from the 1850s, this honey-coloured stone cottage has been lovingly restored, retaining exposed beams, Cotswold stone walls and an impressive inglenook fireplace alongside stylish furnishings and thoughtful modern touches.

There is plenty of space for families and friends to relax together. Gather around the wood burner in the inviting sitting room, enjoy leisurely dinners in the spacious dining area or retreat to the cosy library with a good book. With blackout blinds, the library can also be transformed into a movie room for relaxed evenings together. The light-filled garden room opens onto the terrace and landscaped garden, while four comfortable bedrooms include two king-size rooms with Juliet balconies. Outside, the garden is a real highlight, with beautiful views across the picturesque village ford and neighbouring meadows – a wonderfully peaceful backdrop for morning coffee, al fresco dining or evening drinks.

Step beyond the garden and you are immersed in one of the Cotswolds’ prettiest villages. Shilton is centred around The Shill brook, with a traditional village green, honey-stone cottages and a delightful 18th-century hump-backed bridge. The Rose & Crown is just across the road, perfect for an evening meal or relaxed drink. Fans of Downton Abbey may also recognise the village, with its old forge and picturesque bridge appearing on screen.

A short drive brings you to Burford, often described as the gateway to the Cotswolds. Wander its famous sloping High Street, lined with historic buildings, independent boutiques, antique shops, cafés and traditional inns. Nearby Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens makes a wonderful family day out.

For quintessential Cotswold exploring, visit Bourton-on-the-Water and its attractive bridges across the River Windrush, browse the galleries and independent shops of Stow-on-the-Wold, or discover the idyllic villages of Bibury and the Slaughters. Kingham, Chipping Norton and Moreton-in-Marsh are also within easy reach, with scenic drives through rolling countryside connecting many of the area’s best-loved villages.

For food lovers there are lots of wonderful village pubs, serving seasonal food, plus farmers markets and shops, including Diddly Squat farm shop and pub just a five minutes drive away. A little further afield but also worth the visit is the ever chic and tasteful Daylesford farm shop with a lovely cafe and restaurant.

Walkers have miles of footpaths, bridleways and countryside to discover, including peaceful routes through the Windrush Valley and walks between honey-stone villages. Further afield, spend a day at magnificent Blenheim Palace, explore the beautiful gardens at Hidcote and Kiftsgate or enjoy the seasonal colour at Batsford Arboretum.

Oxford is also within comfortable driving distance for a day exploring its historic colleges, museums and architecture. Afterwards, return to peaceful Shilton, settle into the garden overlooking the ford and meadows or curl up for a film in the library – a fitting end to a day discovering the Cotswolds.
