Thank you for your great review. We don't understand the limited drinks comment? We have 7 ciders, 5 lagers, 3 bitters, a huge wine list, walls of spirit and a vast amount of soft drinks. We hope to welcome you again soon.

A friendly welcome
The team was incredibly welcoming, and looked after me well. I had a lovely evening meal, and they were kind enough to do an early breakfast for me, as I was doing a long-distance walk and needed to make the most of daylight hours. The room was quite compact, and it is clearly an older building, but was comfy enough for me. The bathroom was compact, but certainly not cramped.

The most unhygienic hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Arrived around lunchtime and ordered some food in the pub. Upon sitting down we noticed food scraps all over the floor, the table was filthy and the wall behind the booth was covered in mould. We couldn’t lean back as we would have got mould in our hair/on our clothes. The staff were friendly and were able to get us into our room well ahead of check-in time but unfortunately the cleanliness of the hotel completely overshadowed the whole experience. The rooms were a decent size but everything was so old - the sheets, towels and pillows looked about 10 years old. I actually couldn’t bring myself to sleep under the sheets and slept with my coat over me. There was mould in the shower and spiders. The room got quite cold at night so I left the plug-in heater running for an hour or so before falling asleep. I woke up to a spark from the heater and realised it had died. It was a great location for what we were doing in Devon but would never stay there again. I heard of friends of friends who actually couldn’t do another night at the hotel and went back to London early.

Dear Hannah,We are sorry you found your experience below par. There is no mould on the wall. This is a 400 year old original Inn, not a prefab. The towels are exactly 1 year old, the pillows just a month old with protectors and we have brand new bedding. There are always spiders in old buildings and webs do appear overnight. As fastidious as the cleaners are, they do not maintain a night watch vigil, it is part and parcel of being nestled in the countryside. We apologise if your table was not clean prior to sitting down.I think you really need to report any problems to management so that something can be done to rectify any issues you may have. Slamming a business unnecessarily does no justice to you or anyone else. The friend of a friend story, is just that, a story. Unfortunately they left a day early as they had to attend to a sick relative. Please do not spread untruths. Best wishes, West Country Inn

Dear Phillip. We would be very interested to know why you found us "terrible?" You and your colleague arrived to pre warmed rooms, enjoyed a meal of BBQ ribs with a large salad, corn on the cob, premium fries, cob corn with butter and a dish of coleslaw each. Your food was made fresh to order and not pre-packaged. You never gave us even a hint of criticism or voiced any concern. Reviews like these are upsetting to our staff when they are doing everything in their power to provide and enjoyable and comfortable stay. For whatever possible reason, we are sorry you found us to be "terrible".

faulty towers would get five stars in comparison
arrived early to find placed locked up so left , came back 15 min before alloted time and was greeted by you are not expected until 5pm but ill let you in . later was told we were not booked for breakfast but can if wanted , then said you would be better going to Mc Donalds , return Sunday for evening meal the chef( only person on site ) says no meals tonight normal Sunday roast but they are all gone and can't be bothered to cook anything . the room was never serviced and as result nothing on the tea tray for morning cup . we left

Staying over between jobs in Bideford and Plymouth; really lovely, comfortable and clean room - lovely old building, and a beautiful bedroom. Full English breakfast cooked perfectly, orange juice, fresh coffee ('proper' coffee, not the quick granular stuff) and plenty of cereal to choose from. Will be booking here again both for work AND if and when I come to Devon for a break. Really lovely staff.

Disappointing
The hotel was very short-staffed and it showed. The manager/owner was very friendly but run off his feet as he had to do everything. The room was unclean, no hot water in the room and as it was a weekend no plumber was available, and poor choice of cereals at breakfast.

Dear disappointing, I am sorry you experienced a plumbing issue. We have called the plumber and everything now works as it should. We have no control over any faulty breakdown issue. I do not understand the poor choice of cereals? There are 4 plus porridge from which to choose, -(Crunchy Nut, Special K, Fruit & Fibre and Co-Co pops - not enough for you? We are a 9 bedroom AA 3 Star Rated Inn. What would you have liked? I have asked the cleaning team about your cleanliness issue? All of our rooms are routinely inspected. I apologise if we did not meet your expectations. All rooms have been recently painted and decorated to freshen up after the long period of lock down. Perhaps, some more feedback from you would be nice? 'Anonymous' ID does not help us if nothing is reported to us at the time. As for staffing, all of us in the Hospitality Trade are suffering with lack of employees, many of which are still on furlough. It seems that nobody wishes to work at the moment. Like many others, we have advertised until we are blue in the face and the issue has been frequently reported on the national news channels. Nothing can rectify the current national shortage at this point in time, a product of the aftermath of a national Covid crisis. We wish you well for the future. The West Country Team.

I understand it’s been an hard year for all, but it’s no excuse for not doing some well needed updating. The room was so outdated, dusty and cobwebs everywhere , Stains on the sheets and the constant smell of damp. I was disappointed because it was an overnight surprise for the girlfriend, close to the road but I knew this when I booked up, who was in charge, the grey haired lady from behind the bar or the chef, the food was ok. The West Country inn is tired inside and out, with so much potential the place could be fabulous, shame.

Hello reviewer. The West Country Inn has just had a make over with all rooms freshly painted and builders inside the bar to re-render the whole wall. Where did you stay? West Country Inn? We beg to differ. Sounds like you require a Travel Lodge not an authentic (outdated?) 400 year old Inn. This makes no sense whatsoever. No grey haired ladies here either? Insensitive, you must be. Very cosy and friendly place!
Everyone was very friendly and welcoming and the food was incredible. I absolutely loved the cosy and rustic look/feel of the hotel room. The large fireplace in the restaurant/bar which I noticed on arrival was heaven in the mid December chill! This place is definitely worth a visit when on your travels!

Great views and excellent hospitality
A last-minute booking. I was made to feel really welcome immediately, shown to my room (which had a lovely view of the countryside. The room was clean and tidy, obviously traditional in character. I then popped down to the bar area to enjoy a wine and a delicious dinner.

Well had dinner which was very average for the price when i asked what time breakfast was in the morning all the lady kept saying not in that room rate . When she looked at our booking she could see we had breakfast was in with the rate. Then she said its 8-30 which is no good for working people so we had to forget it which she seemed to be very pleased about as she said we have not paid enough i payed extra for a cooked breakfast . Not just me and my wok mate another chap was in the same boat had to go to work without. At the end of the day we payed the rate on the site of Hotels.Com and i think if a place dose not do breakfast till late it should be pointed out Would i stay again NO

Dear Martyn, The Staff do remember you well. We could not do enough to ensure that you enjoyed your stay. You seem to be contradictory.... You did not pay 'extra' what so ever for breakfast. Our regular breakfast time slot is at 08.30am. However, you may also book a time slot of 07.30am and many of our working clients will request this. We also offer a Free packed lunch in lieu of. With several options to choose from, we would respectfully request that you adjust your attitude when speaking to our Staff who would have been more than pleased to help. The other "chap" you spoke of, elected to have a lie in and checked out after 10am! Your perceptions were not factually correct. We apologise that you felt aggrieved in any way. We have been looking after our guests for 16 years and like to think we are a friendly caring and personable team. We employ the most accomplished & experienced Chefs in this area, everything is sourced locally and hand made. I think you must have had a bad work day and we are sorry to have received the brunt of your wrath. Best regards for your future.

I booked this for my husband and a friend so didn’t see the room first hand, but the photos they showed me on their return told a very different story to those displayed on this website.... also no room service, no bottled water ( both shown as available in the listing.... and breakfast WAS NOT INVKUDED, despite a description and booking confirmation details stating quite clearly that it was.... the landlady was incredibly rude to my husband, and when I attempted to rectify the situation over the phone, she was also abusive and downright rude to me.....whilst the rooms were apparently relatively clean if basic, the bar was described and pictured as very dated, in need of a good clean, and having a strange smell... also the cider was bad and upset my friends stomach through the night... Overall I would definitely not recommend this accommodation but would rather warn people off

The position of the property was good for what we wanted to do for the weekend. The condition of the property however needs a lot to be desired. It is a very old building needing a substantial amount of TLC. As for the room we stayed in, well where should i start. The cleanliness was awfull, the bedding was like something from the 1900's, the mattress crunched everytime you made a move in any direction. The ensuite bathroom, dont make me laugh, the shower was absolutely awfull, a dribble at most. I'm going to stop now as there too many other things to mention.

Dear Anonymous, I am very sorry that you did not appreciate our beautiful property. In a property of this age of over 400 years, there are always ongoing maintenance as with any hotel. All rooms have been repainted and refurbished and the entire Inn was only re-painted last year with costs amounting to over 10K. We appreciate you may not like the décor, but this is of personal taste and we reflect our choice to sympathetically match the bygone era and history of this authentic 16c coaching Inn. All the towels are brand new, in fact big fluffy gold high quality that you do not see in many hotels. If you would like a modern purpose built square accommodation without authentic old beams, then I would suggest a visit to a Premier Inn or Travel Lodge. They may better suit your needs and expectations. Furthermore, the mattress has never represented a problem with other reviewers> As a benefit of doubt, we will review this aspect to see if it needs replacing. If you do not mention any problems during the time of your stay, how are we to rectify any problems that you may have? We are fully dedicated and take pride in our property to ensure our guests are comfortable. I am afraid this property was clearly not of your taste. If one looks at the overall picture of reviews, it would seem that yours is an anomaly. It seems that you did not fully turn the shower to it's maximum output. We wish you well. The welcome, accommodation and breakfast was ok but the service, particularly for breakfast was bad. Something went radically wrong. Late attendance by the chef and someone sleeping in seemed to be to blame. Also on arrival beer ran out and staff were unable to successfully change the barrel. We chose to take our evening meal elsewhere as a result. Staff and owner were friendly enough, maybe they had a one off crisis.

Dear Anonymous, We are sorry that you felt disappointed by breakfast. The Chef was not late and nobody slept in. Our breakfast time started at 8.30am as advertised as it has done for 16 years. We are able to accommodate an earlier seating by request only. The Staff have been trained on how to change a beer barrel and the proprietor is unable to be on site 24 hours a day. If the supply of a barrel runs out, we will do our best to replace it as quickly as possible. From the server's perspective, they are unaware as to when a barrel finishes, until such a time as the product no longer draws. It is such a shame that you chose to locate your meal elsewhere as we have superb Chefs on site. You really did miss out on that one. Never judge a book by it's cover. Kind regards and apologies if you misconstrued the situation.

the staff were friendly and accommodating - but it was in a quiet time. The food was good and good value. The place as a whole was looking and feeling a bit dated but in good condition. I'd go back again

Thank you Les for your review. The Inn will always look dated as it is over 400 years old. We are very sympathetic to it's roots and decorate accordingly. During the Summer, the whole Inn benefitted with a re-paint outside. At a huge cost, unlike a chain, we can afford to do on a priority basis. I am glad you enjoyed your stay. No Room at The INN.
When I arrived about 4.30pm, there was no one about and the building was secured. I telephoned and got no reply, eventually the land lady called me back. She told me the premises does not open until 6.0pm but would check me in anyway (5.30pm). She took me to the room and I began to have a look around, on removing the duvet from the bed the linen looked as if the bed had already been slept in, sheets all creased and loosely fitting, the pillow cases were odd and one was stained. I spoke to the land lady who assured me the bed was freshly made, on showing her the bed she said the wrong sized sheet had been fitted and offered to remake the bed. So no service was available until 6.0pm I had been driving (business trip) for about 5 hours so as you can imagine I was certainly NOT impressed. I told the land lady I was not staying and would find accommodation else where, she apologised and I left.

Dear Howard, I have responded to this review several times. You are able to check in anytime after 2pm. You did not find the correct entrance and telephoned me as I was helping another customer. Regretfully you did not find the correct main entrance next to the car park and I had to wait for you to return from the wrong side of the building. The sheets were clean but creased as the housekeeper put a king sized bottom sheet on your bed instead of a double. I even showed you this, apologised for the mistake and thought you would understand, but you did not. I inspected the pillow case in question, I could find no stain and asked you where it was? You refuted our attempts to rectify a simple remedy by allowing me to put the correct sized linen on the bed. I would have even offered you a bottle of wine for your trouble but unfortunately you were unwilling to let us rectify the situation. It was only the food service that was not available until 6pm, everything else was available. We hope you found the perfect stay. Kind regards, Laura.

Booked for two nights but only stayed for one!
The room I was shown to by a member of staff on my arrival in the afternoon was situated almost above the beer cellar and the noise from the cooling fan was quite intrusive. I was told that the fan was always turned off at midnight when the bar closed but as I was going to a family birthday celebration and would not be returning until late it I thought it not to be a problem. I returned around midnight and people were still there drinking in the bar so I had a beer and went to bed. I awoke around 2.30 to find that the fan was still running and in the quietness of the night it was so unbearably loud that I found it impossible to go back to sleep. The hotel was in darkness and I could find no way of contacting staff to get the fan turned off. In the morning I complained to the staff and was told that they had forgotten to turn it off. I decided not stay for the second night that I had booked but I still had to pay for the my sleepless one!

Dear Mike, I am very sorry to read this especially after our focused attention to you. We waived your charge for the second night. I am sorry that you felt so disturbed that you felt the need to post this months later. We did everything we could to appease you. There are people who are not disturbed and hear nothing. I am sorry for your experience. I offered to accommodate you for free the second night in a different room. What a shame. Kind regards.

Tired but friendly
We booked a room for three and a dog and were given the family bedroom which slept 5. We were met by the friendly Martin who gave us our key and directions to the room. The room was clean and tidy, however we stayed two days and the 'refreshing' of the bedroom consisted of a cup being washed and tidied back in place. The bed hadn't been made and the toiletries weren't replenished, you could feel the springs in the mattress on the double bed and the pillows were lumpy however we had no trouble in sleeping. The gym wasn't enquired about and wasn't volunteered to be shown around. Overall the inn looked tired however ever the staff were excellent and would help in any way possible
