The staff was friendly but the place was absolutely run down. We arrived later than 5pm after we had contacted the manager who kindly had put out the key. We had a look around the premises and felt immediately unsafe with people hanging around the place as if it was emergency housing. And so we found out that it is. I believe that it is not okay to put tourists into an accommodation like this. This should not happen for both sides. We know the person who has build Pillows many years ago and it was a terrible experience to find Pillows like that! However we left in a haste as I got quite upset. It was very difficult to find another accommodation and we had to pay a lot of money in Orewa. When we came back to let the manager know, he already had charged us for the night. I can understand that there need to be cancellation fees, however for this place which should be not permitted to be advertised and offered as accommodation, it is even more upsetting for me to pay so much money for being misinformed. We talked to locals and everybody said that it has been emergency housing, that Police would be turning up there on a regular base. As much as I support emergency housing, one cannot not offer these premises as accommodation and charge money for it. The manager did his job, but I will try to retrieve my money, if necessary with legal action as it needs to stop to invite people to stay there and pay money. If we can get refunded, I am happy to not take any further action.
