Description

Immerse yourself in the cultural traditions of Eastern Switzerland while visiting this idyllic region so redolent of Heidi. Purchase some delicious Lindt chocolate and sample the traditional wheel-shaped Appenzeller cheese before exploring the lovely Appenzell village.

Sit back as your minibus travels along the beautiful Lake Zurich, then stop for a while at the outlet shop of the Lindt & Sprüngli Chocolate Factory. Smell the gorgeous aroma of chocolate and take this opportunity to do some shopping at the well-located stores.

On the journey, pass Rapperswil, well known for its medieval castle, then continue on to the green and hilly region of Appenzell. In Stein, visit the cheese factory where the famous Appenzeller cheese is made. Learn more about cheese making and the ancient traditions of this region, before tasting some of the delicious cheeses.

Continue on to the picturesque village of Appenzell. During your free time here, perhaps enjoy a local speciality in one of the cosy Appenzeller restaurants. The pedestrian zone, with its beautiful façades, is perfect for a gentle stroll and some window shopping. Alternatively, you could take the opportunity to visit the Museum of Appenzell, and learn more about the culture, traditions and way of life in this part of Switzerland.

Before heading back to Zürich, meet back with your guide, who leads you to the square of the cantonal assembly, the “Landsgemeindeplatz”, and explains the political tradition which is still alive in the canton of Appenzell. Make a short stop at a traditional bakery to learn more about the famous “Appenzeller Biberli” – a traditional delicious gingerbread with honey and nuts.
