Description

Discover an important side of Berlin's history as you uncover the city's Jewish heritage. Take an illuminating walk through the city with an expert Jewish Studies scholar, focusing on key sites that reveal the historical challenges and rich cultural life of Berlin's strong Jewish community.

Meet your guide, a scholar who specialises in Jewish Studies, in the heart of the city. Your tour starts at the remains of the Old Synagogue, an excellent introduction to the life of Berlin Jews and the historical tensions that gave them a vulnerable status. Make your way to the Weißensee Cemetery, which offers a vivid picture of the city's Jewish presence.

Explore the Barn Quarter, which housed a significant portion of Berlin's Jewish population. Your tour takes a sobering turn as your guide takes you to sites that recall the Holocaust. See the Missing House, a former Jewish residence destroyed by aerial bombardment in 1945, and visit the tiny Koppenplatz park to reflect on the Abandoned Room monument, which memorialises the Jewish victims of the 1938 pogrom known as Kristallnacht.

After delving deep into Berlin's dark and troubling Jewish history, your tour continues on a hopeful note with a visit to Beth-Café. In this kosher coffee shop, see an example of the renewal of Berlin's Jewish community over the last several decades. Your final stop is the New Synagogue, a grand symbol of Jewish assimilation in Germany and a moving reminder of Berlin's enduring Jewish community.

Our guide is working on a PhD on Anti-Semitism, and was young but extremely knowledgeable. She had a thorough grasp of the history of Jews in Berlin for many centuries, but could also discuss contemporary issues from her perspective. We did a 6hr walking tour of Berlin the day before, which refreshed the general historical background of the city, but our guide went deeply into the Jewish experiences. It is so important to have someone like this, to point out the non-obvious details.
