Description

Uncover the significant yet tumultuous history of Berlin on this guided bike tour along sites of the Berlin Wall. Dive into captivating Cold War-era stories—from the tragic to the funny to the unbelievably absurd—as you cycle past sites like the Berlin Wall Memorial, Brandenburg Gate, and Checkpoint Charlie.

Meet up with your group at the KulturBrauerei complex, where you get set up with your bike and helmet. Once you're ready to ride, pedal off into the streets, cruising along roughly 9.5 miles (15 km) of the former “death strip.” As you ride, your knowledgeable guide—one who may have even experienced these struggles first hand—shares stories of the way the wall affected the Berlin people. Hear of families torn apart and young people who risked their lives attempting to get over the wall.

Your tour leads you by sites like the Berlin Wall Memorial, where the last remaining totally intact portion of the wall can be seen. Cruise by once-terrifying watchtowers like Kieler Eck, as well as Checkpoint Charlie, the most famous border crossing between East and West Berlin. Near the wall, you can also see sites connected to other turbulent times in the city's history, such as the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

It's not all just a symbol of tragedy, however. Your tour also focuses on the way the city has redefined itself in recent decades. See historic sites standing among new buildings, which serve as both a reminder of the wall and the rapid development that took place after its fall. Admire the 18th-century Brandenburg Gate, a monument which has come to symbolise European unity and peace. Your guide also leads you to spots like Mauerpark, a section of the “death strip” which has been transformed into a vibrant part of new Berlin.
