Discover the countryside south of Munich as you journey to the banks of stunning Lake Chiemsee. Here, glimpse three islands, one of which boasts King Ludwig II's most illustrious castle, Herrenchiemsee. Admire the beautiful lakeside views from alluring lake-side towns.

Leave the city behind and journey through stunning Bavarian countryside to Lake Chiemsee. Take the option for a boat trip out to the island housing Herrenchiemsee – the largest of Ludwig II's palaces. Seize the opportunity to enter the grounds for a guided tour and admire the ornate architecture and classical gardens that defined King Ludwig's romantic style.

Another short cruise brings you to Fraueninsel – the middle-sized island of three to be found on the lake. Here, a more modestly constructed Benedictine monastery helps create a pleasant, quiet environment on this car-free island. Complete your tour with a journey back to the lake-shore, then return to Munich refreshed from your time in the Bavarian countryside.

Monika is an outstanding tour guide, who speaks exceptionally fluent English, knows the most efficient way to tour the islands of Chiemsee, and takes great care to inform the group. Herrenchiemsee is fascinating as a tribute to Versailles in general and Louis XIV in particular. I highly recommend picking up the inexpensive (~6 euro) book of photos and historical details from the gift shop while waiting for the boat. Also, the 'ladies' island' is well worth spending some time. Check out the exhibit of fresco remnants and other medieval artifacts, and the nearby church. If I have any critcism for this your experience, it would be this. The ride back can be frustrating due to heavy traffic near the drop-off point downtown. Riders should be given the option to disembark at an earlier stop before the bus gets into the downtown area and the heavy traffic. This would also be a good way for safety-conscious travelers to avoid this area in the event of a protest or demonstration, such as the one we drove past on our return trip.
