Description

Driving on the German Alpine Road takes you past some glorious landscapes and breath-taking mountains, far from the bustle of Munich city centre. Peaks towering over 2,000 metres (6,500 feet) high surround the charming town of Berchtesgaden. Head up the Kehlstein spur of the Hoher Göll to visit the infamous Eagle's Nest.

The picture-perfect town of Berchtesgaden, with its charming alleys and former royal palace, is one of the most enchanting places in Bavaria. The idyllic scenery of the surrounding pine-covered mountains hides a dark history: this area was the official retreat of Nazi leaders.

You have the option to visit the NS Documentation Centre at Obersalzberg, a first-rate museum focussed on the Third Reich. Visitors also have access to the adjacent Nazi bunker system.

You can also visit Eagle's Nest, a chalet-style building erected high atop the Kehlstein. It was intended as a 50th-birthday present to Adolf Hitler, to serve as his retreat as well as a place to entertain visiting dignitaries. During the winter months, when roads may be blocked by snow, you can instead drop in to see the impressive salt mines of the area.

Good tour. A big issue I have with it was once we were on the road we were informed we would have to pay for another bus to shuttle us to the top. They charged €20. When we were waiting for that bus one of the participants noticed that the actual charge for tickets on that shuttle bus were being sold for €16.50. The shuttle bus charge should have been included in the price as the option to walk instead of taking the shuttle bus would have been impossible time wise. Can I get a €20 refund?

Wonderful tour with great scenery. We were lucky to have such a clear day. We also did the document tour with bunker. It was just ok but is only 3 euro so we did it. Tour guide was very helpful and explained sites and their history as we passed them on our route. I wish they did not convert the building on top into a restaurant. Should have kept it as it was when hitler visited for conferences or r and r.

Disappointed that we were not able to visit the city of Berchtesgaden and there was no alternative activity/compensation (except for one picture stop at the side of the highway). I wouldn’t recommend this tour.
