Remarkably good inn, in a remarkably good location, with remarkably good food and extraordinarily nice hosts. In summary, The Royal Oak is English rural culture at its very best. It is something a hotel chain can never be.
The inn is exactly what I imagined an inn or pub should be. It's located at the centre of a smallish village in a very quiet rural area. Inside it has been refreshed and was done with great effect. It still has the low old ceiling beams, stone fireplace and wood panelled walls but has plenty of natural light. The overall effect is great.
The inn's chef is a magician. The food was exceptional and presented in a way that would not be out of place in a 5 star restaurant. It really was that good. I encourage every one to visit and enjoy a meal there.
The rooms were comfortable, warm, with easy access. And they were super quiet. The bathroom was a good size and there was plenty of hot water.
The most extraordinary thing was the hosts. They are among the most friendly, down to earth people we have meet. They are genuinely friendly, engaging, and humble people. Without them, our experience at the Royal Oak would not have been so memorable. They have our ongoing appreciation.
