Rundrum ausgezeichnet
In der Hochsaison suchten wir ein Hotel und entschieden uns notgedrungen für dieses obwohl wir sonst eher in günstigeren übernachten. Und wir wurden nicht enttäuscht, waren sogar froh, auf dieses Juwel gestossen zu sein. Vom sehr freundlichen Empfang zum schönen und geräumigen Zimmer, dann zu den Frühstückszeiten bis 12 Uhr (!) und dem wunderbaren Essen am Abend auf der schönen Terrasse. Wir fühlten uns sehr wohl.

I don't like writing reviews like these. The owener and staff were very nice. Facilities were great with 2 fatal flaws: 1) Not enough hot water capacity (I had cool to cold showers 2 out of 3 days). I mentioned it to the owner and was told there were too many guests. Thats a capacity proplem not a guest problem. 2) the rooms heat could not be controlled so if you wanted to relax in your room you had to crawl under the blankets or wrap them around you (it was a cold wet week - again, not the guests fault). Being a hotel owner is a hard business and hard decisions about resources can be difficult but excepting your guests to shower at 5am (which my wife got up to do) or in the evening is a deal breaker for me. Any guest, no matter how beautiful the hotel is or how nice the owner/staff are should not be expected to shoulder this deficiency. My strong suggestion is #1increase the hot water capacity and become the 5 star hotel you could and should be. I hope this issue is resolved.

En primer lugar le pedimos disculpas por el problema con el agua caliente y la calefacción. El Hotel tiene dos calderas y lo que ocurrió es que una de ellas se bloqueó. Al ser festivo no pude contactar con el servicio técnico hasta dos días después. Con una caldera hay suficiente agua caliente siempre que no coincidan muchas duchas y baños al mismo tiempo.Su queja es acertada, lo único que no es cierto es que no dije que hubiera demasiados huéspedes, lo que dije es que coincidieron todos en ducharse y bañarse al mismo tiempo

Beautiful and interesting property. The stay here was the highlight of our trip to Spain. Dinner in the dining room was delicious. The pâté de foie gras was generous and delicious. The boneless oxtail entree was superb. The owner picked an amazing Rioja Reserva that paired wonderfully with the food. The family was very gracious and made the stay here very memorable. Will be back!!!

Anniversary and Birthday weekend.
We had a lovely 2 night stay here in Villa de Abalos. The owner and his daughter were a very friendly and helpful couple. Great knowledge on the local wines and the food was excellent. We will definitely be staying here again sometime in the future.

Prima hotel.
Een prima hotel in het mooie Rioja gebied. Het hotel ligt midden in het dorp van Ábalos en s een goed uitgaan punt om de omgeving te bekijken. Het is een klassiek stijlvol hotel met uitgesleten traptreden. Je krijgt het gevoel in een kasteel te verblijven, maar er is ook een lift om met je bagage naar de kamer te gaan. De eigenaar is heel vriendelijk, maar zit niet om een praatje verlegen. Het personeel is ook heel vriendelijk. Gratis parkeren op afgesloten terrein. Prima ontbijt en mogelijkheden voor lunch en diner. Aan het hotel is ook een bar aanwezig waar de lokale bevolking komt. Heel gezellig, mits je de taal machtig bent. De kamers zijn netjes en schoon.

Perfect for Rioja
We returned after 3 years and were delighted that the hotel was as good if not better than when we were last there. The warm welcome, friendly, helpful staff, and excellent food and wine made it a memorable stay for our party of 8. One change since 2012 was the installation of a tapas/wine bar in the foyer of the hotel, which is particularly popular with the locals on Sunday lunchtimes. It's popularity reflects the quality and variety of what is available. Another innovation is that the wines, many of which are local to the village, are also available for purchase from the hotel in addition to José's own vineyard wine. Prices are as good as visiting the individual bodegas and so if you are pressed for time allows you to sample and buy a variety of Riojas. Well done José and Merche and we hope to return again soon.

Fantastic little hotel in a very small town.
We had a wonderful time at Villa de Abalos. Truly a wonderful staff. The happy hour on Friday night allowed us to experience first-hand the local culture of a small town in La Rioja. The food, wine and service were all top notch. We felt very welcome and would go back.

A great base for your Rioja visit
We stayed two nights for our visit in La Rioja. You can't go wrong on this hotel. First, it's in a lovely little town. Second, the hotel is absolutely charming. The decor captures the feeling of old Spain. Yet all rooms and public areas look freshly and tastefully decorated. The breakfast is one of the best we've had in Spain on this trip and the dinner was oh so good. Veal beef cheeks - to die for with a wonderfully rich dark sauce - almost a glaze. Their house wines are also very good - and we bought two to bring home. There's a happening scene on Friday nights about 6 PM where many locals congregate for wine and tapas. Just a note: if you have a room overlooking the street, you may hear joyous celebratory sounds well into the night. A room on the non-street side might offer better sleeping!

Very small village
Good for an overnight stopover. Although quite interesting to see a very small village/ hamlet there was only one bar and the hotel to eat and drink in. The owner didn't seem overly interested in us( it maybe an exception but, on the night we stayed we were the only guests in the hotel. The owner did tell us that the previous night a bus load or tourists came in and they were full so, maybe he was tired?) We ordered some tapas for dinner but got the impression it was going to be difficult for his wife( the chef) to cook anything too difficult. Wonderful stay in Spain's Rioja Wine Region.
Location of this hotel is outstanding especially if you are looking for a central place to do wine tours from as you are only 10+ minutes from Haro and only 20+ minutes from Logrono and many many wineries within just minutes. Also the breakfast which is included is more than good its outstanding and you have private gated parking for your rental car on site for free. We would definitely stay here again.

I booked this hotel from other reviews, however, my experience was not good. The hotel is very difficult to find. Our room was very hot, no a/c, until late evening. The hotel itself is nice inside, but the owner is very stuffy and unhelpful in locating things to do in the area. We were booked for two days but left early. It was only as we were leaving that he suggested that there were "so many thing to see and do in the area". Unlike the day before when there was "nothing we could do that day".The dinner was not great, as other reviews said, and the atmosphere is strained and restrictive. I would never recommend this hotel to a friend. We left the area,(so glad we did not stay another night) went to another hotel and finished a wonderful vacation.

A little hard to find at first, but this great villa in this sleepy little village in the middle of Rioja Alta could not be a more pictureque or wonderful location. You have to "eat in" one evening. The food was great, including the breakfasts.
